One of the streams running into my own artistic-consciousness is the inclination to use found objects things Id rather recycle than reject in the name of art. Too old and too rebellious to follow traditional art dictates, I enjoy experimenting. Therein lies the thrill for me. Another stream is the fabric I inherited from my mother, she of the eight-grade education who wound up selling an invention to a major manufacturer when she was 75. My mother typified the words of Thomas Edison: Inventing is not hard. All you need is a good idea and a lot of junk. We had one large room of our house devoted to that junk. My father entered it one day and began scolding her. You have bolts of fabric here from wedding gowns you made 50 years ago! The drawers are so full of ribbons and scissors and buttons and zippersyou cant even close them. Take my advice, he lectured, if you havent used something in the last year, get rid of it! She daggered
him with a scornful look. I havent used you in the
last 20 years, she observed. Should I get rid of
you? The argument ended with that query.
